Shows your ward and council from free open data (postcodes.io). Councillor names and contact details come from official council pages — we link you there rather than listing them here.
Find my councillor by postcode — how this tool works
Searches like find my councillor by postcode, find my ward by postcode, and council wards by postcode all need the same first step: resolve your electoral ward and local planning authority from your address. Planning applications are decided by that authority — usually your district, borough, or unitary council — not Parliament.
This free tool shows your ward and council from open postcode data, then links to official councillor finders on your council's website or GOV.UK. We do not maintain a separate councillor name directory (details change with elections).
How to find your councillor by postcode
- Enter a UK postcode (with or without spaces).
- We resolve your electoral ward and local authority names from open geographic data.
- Open the official councillor finder for your council, or use GOV.UK's find-your-local-councillors service.
- Use our council directory for the planning portal link if you also need to object to an application.
Councillors and planning objections
Ward councillors do not decide applications alone, but they can explain the process, represent community views at committee, and point you to the right officer contact. Your objection still needs material planning grounds submitted on the portal.
For Tier 2 customers, Planning Guard includes a councillor briefing document — but anyone can use this lookup to find official contact routes after researching the application.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find my councillor by postcode?
- Enter your postcode in this tool to see your ward and council, then follow the official council or GOV.UK councillor finder link. Planning Guard does not list individual councillor names because they change with elections.
- Can my councillor help with a planning objection?
- Ward councillors can often point you to the right process and may represent community views at committee. They do not decide applications alone, but a clear objection can help them understand your case.
- Why doesn't Planning Guard show my councillor's name?
- We show your ward and council from open postcode data, then link to official councillor finders. Councillor contact details change with elections — we do not maintain a separate directory.
- Is this the same as contacting my MP?
- No. Planning applications are decided by your local planning authority. Your ward councillors are the usual local elected contacts for planning in your area.
- How do I find my council's planning portal?
- Use our UK council directory — each page links to the official planning register search for that authority.
- Is find my councillor by postcode free?
- Yes. No signup required.
- Does this work for parish councils?
- We show the principal local authority for your postcode. Parish or town council boundaries are separate — check your council website for parish matters.
